India is home to one of the largest user bases of mobile phones in the world. Right from the days when mobile phones were grossly expensive and considered a novelty, we have been welcoming new technologies with open arms.
This tech-savvy (or mobile-savvy) nature of Indians has lead to a continuous influx of new technologies and devices into our markets. With new devices, new manufacturers come in too.
This surprisingly impressive model is the topic of this post.
Energy 653 has many features at just Rs 4999
This dual SIM phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor (1.1 GHz quad-core), 1 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM and runs on Android Lollipop (version 5.1.1). At a very affordable price tag of Rs. 4999, it is available exclusively on Amazon.in.
Providing 4G connectivity at this price is one of the main features of PHICOMM Energy 653. You can use 4G on one of the SIM slots, whereas the other one supports 2G. Sharing of Internet connection via WiFi hot spot is also possible.
At a thickness of just 8 mm, and weighing less than 125 grams, the phone is really slim-and-trim.
Unicode support is not an issue. Viewing and keying in content in regional languages is easy. You can also set many Indian languages as the default UI language.
Black and white are the two available colors. The back cover is smooth and due to the glossy finish, attracts smudges and finger prints. A matte finish, perhaps, would have made the phone look better and easy to hold.
Memory, Battery etc
This phone sports a 5-inch (12.7 centimeters) HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Its quality is really surprising, considering that the phone costs just Rs 4,999! Viewing angles are quite good, and it behaves reasonably well in sunlight too.
Watching HD videos, too, is a nice experience. Thanks to the “H.265 hardware decoder” which ensures “better video compression”, streaming is quite fast and seamless. Voice quality is also impressive.
The volume and power buttons are placed on the right side of the phone, whereas the earphone jack and the micro USB port are at the top. Home, back and the menu keys are on the bottom of the screen - they are not back-lit.
Mobile screen is not covered by Gorilla glass. A screen guard comes packed in the box - which is a nice thing - but its quality could have been better. A USB cable and charger also come along in the box. However, earphones are not provided.
Out if the 8 GB memory, approximately 5 GB is available to the users. It is heartening to note that PHICOMM has decided not to load up the phone with too much of bloatware. If 5 GB is not enough for you, the phone lets you use a micro SD card and increase the storage by up to 64 GB. Using other storage devices with OTG is not supported.
The 2300 mAH battery is quite impressive too. On normal usage, one charge can happily last for at least a day. And yes, the battery is removable.
And the camera...
How are the cameras of Energy 653?
PHICOMM Energy 653 comes with an impressive 8 megapixel primary camera, and a 2 megapixel front camera. The primary camera captures nicely when the lighting is good, and does okay otherwise. However, the front camera is very basic - it has a fixed focus, and maybe because of that, gives some very average images.

This is definitely a great phone for beginners, and for users who are thinking of upgrading from their feature phone to a smartphone.
One year manufacturer warranty is available for the device, along with 6 months manufacturer warranty for in-box accessories including the battery. The quality of after sales service, however, remains to be seen. List of service centers is available on PHICOMM India’s website.
